Worked example

10 m² of bathroom wall in 600 × 300 mm tiles, 3 mm joints, laid straight:

61 tiles to order

  • 5.47 tiles per m² (600 × 300 mm with the joint), 55 before waste
  • 10% extra for straight (grid)
  • 2 bags of adhesive (20 kg), 1 bags of grout (5 kg)

How the sum works

Each tile takes up its own size plus one joint each way, so tiles per m² = 1,000,000 ÷ ((length + joint) × (width + joint)). The calculator multiplies by the area and adds 10 percent for straight or brick bond and 15 percent for diagonal and herringbone, where there are more cuts.

Adhesive and grout

Adhesive is about 3 kg per m² with a 6 mm notched trowel, 5 kg with a 10 mm and 6 kg with a 12 mm, plus 10 percent. Grout depends on the joint width and depth and the tile size. Check both against the maker's chart for your products.

Before you order

Buy all the tiles from one batch, keep a few spare for repairs, and check the floor or wall is flat, sound and ready. Wet rooms and showers need tanking first.
