Worked example
A round soakaway pit 1.2 m across and 1 m deep:
1.13 m³
- 1,131 litres
- 39.9 cubic feet, 1.48 cubic yards
The formulas
Box: length × width × height. Cylinder: 3.1416 × radius × radius × height. Cone: a third of the cylinder with the same base. Pyramid: a third of length × width × height. Wedge (a ramp or a sloping dig, from nothing at one end to full depth at the other): half of length × width × depth.
One cubic metre is 1,000 litres. Measure in metres: 300 mm is 0.3 m.
Soakaways
The size of a soakaway comes from a percolation test and the design, usually to BRE Digest 365, and building control checks it. The volume here is just the sum: it doesn't size one for you.
